This archeological site is located in the Valley of Florida in the town of La Jigua, Copán, about six kilometers from the road to Copan Ruinas..
It was originally inhabited by the Mayan Culture and was first visited by the Danish explorer Jens Yde in 1935. It contains several structures and a core group, which have been researched and restored. The main structure (E 1) is 12 meters high.
Towards the Middle Classical period, a rapid expansion in occupancy in the area is observed and monumental sites such as El Puente, El Abra and Los Higos appear. In this period a high population density concentrates and societies were highly hierarchical. At the same time the interaction network and trade towards the Middle Classical period experimented a rapid expansion of employment in the complex regional and interregional area. It is believed that during this period the sites had the task of relaying and control of trade routes and communication. and relay function and control of trade and communication routes.
The splendor of El Puente Site took place during the Late Classic period (600-900 AD). Although according to research, in the Early Classic period the La Florida Site, located southwest of the Florida Valley, dominated the region.
Within the Mayan southeastern context, most likely most of these centers were under Copan rule. The situation in the area declines as it is linked to the Mayan collapse. Possibly, the most important sites went through the same decline as Copan did, therefore this area in the post -classical period had no significant development.
At the visiting area inside the archaeological El Puente Site, you can appreciate the restored structures, with small visiting tunnels in the main structure group, a natural trail and recreation area formed by the Chinamito River, which is another natural attraction within the park.
